About Tibet

Situated in the southwest frontier of China, Tibet Autonomous Region covers a total area of 1,220,000 square kilometres with population of 2,870,000 (2012). Standing in the southern part of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the whole autonomous region overwhelmingly comprises mountain range with an average elevation of over 4,000 meters above sea level. With an average of over 4,500 meters above sea level the North Tibetan Plateau occupies two- thirds of the whole range. Basins Are surrounded by hills ranging from 300 to 500 meters high, south of the North Tibetan Plateau, lying between Mountain Kailash (Gangdise) and the Himalayas, stretches the valley of Tsangpo (Yarlung Zangbo) River and its tributaries, commonly known as South Tibetan Valley.

This valley, 4,000 metres above sea level, slops down from west to east with Lhasa River Valley plain as its widest section.

Education

Education in Tibet has a special feature of traditional Tibetan medicine, Tibetan culture and history. Different from other provinces in China, Tibet has its own language and character. Education in Tibet is mainly given in both Mandarin Chinese and Tibetan. After graduation in senior high school, most students will go to Sichuan or Yunnan for higher education.

Scholarship

In order to promote the mutual understanding, cooperation and exchanges in politics, economy, culture, education, and trade between China and other countries, the Chinese government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students, teachers and scholars to study and research in Chinese universities. China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC), entrusted by the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as MOE), is responsible for the enrollment and administration of Chinese Government Scholarship programs.

Academic programs of Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Economics, Law, Management, Education, History, Literature, Philosophy and Arts in 252 designated Chinese universities are available to scholarship winners.

CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
Chinese Government Scholarship supports the following 7 programs.

Bilateral Program

This includes full or partial scholarships in accordance with educational exchange agreements or MOUs between the Chinese government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities and international organizations. It supports undergraduate programs, master’s programs, doctoral programs, general scholar programs and senior scholar programs.

Applicants shall apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study in their home countries.

FAQ

Can I apply any university or academy in Tibet?

So far, universities or academies in Tibet could not accept international students. You may choose to study in other provinces.

What is the weather like there?

As in the highest province, it is always pretty cold in Tibet. People have to suffer the altitude stress.
